How to play 2048
Move a direction
Press an arrow key or swipe up, down, left, or right. Every tile on the board slides as far as it can in that direction.
Merge equal tiles
When two tiles with the same number collide, they combine into a single tile worth their sum — 2 and 2 become 4, 4 and 4 become 8, and so on.
Reach 2048
Keep merging until a 2048 tile appears on the board. Want a harder challenge? Keep playing past 2048 toward 4096, 8192, and beyond.
Each move also drops a new tile — usually a 2, occasionally a 4 — onto a random empty cell, so the board never stays static between turns. The game ends the moment no direction produces a move, which happens when the grid is full and no two adjacent tiles share a value.
2048 strategy: how to win consistently
2048 looks like a game of chance because new tiles spawn randomly, but disciplined players win the large majority of the time with two core techniques: the corner method, which locks your highest tile in one corner, and the snake pattern, which keeps every other tile arranged in descending order around it.
The corner method
Pick one corner and commit to keeping your highest-value tile locked there for the whole game, avoiding any move that would pull it out.
Build a snake pattern
Arrange tiles in a descending zig-zag from your anchor corner so big merges line up next to each other instead of scattering.
Favor two directions
Limit yourself mostly to two movement directions and treat the other two as emergency-only moves for a more predictable board.

2048game.live runs as a lightweight browser game with no plugins, no downloads, and no installer — just an HTML page and a small script. That means it loads normally on school Chromebooks, office computers, and networks that restrict downloads or app installs, without needing to bypass anything.
There's nothing to sign up for and nothing to install: open the page, and the board is ready to play. Your best score is saved locally in your browser, so it's still there the next time you visit from the same device.
Beyond the classic 4×4 board
The 2048 formula turned out to be flexible enough to spawn a whole genre. Once you're comfortable with the classic board, these are the variations most players search for next.
Smaller grids: 3×3
A 3×3 board leaves far less room to maneuver, so merges have to be planned several moves ahead. It's a faster, more punishing test of the same corner-and-snake fundamentals.
Larger grids: 5×5 and 6×6
Bigger boards give you more breathing room and let runs last much longer, often pushing well past the 2048 tile toward 8192 or higher before the board fills up.
Themed re-skins
Countless clones swap the numbered tiles for emoji, food, or characters from other games while keeping the exact same merge-and-slide mechanics underneath. The strategy you learn here carries over directly.
The history of 2048
2048 was built in March 2014 by Gabriele Cirulli, an Italian developer, over a single weekend, and released as an open-source project. It was directly inspired by the game Threes and by an earlier browser clone called 1024, which itself borrowed the sliding-tile idea from Threes.
The simplicity of the rules — slide, merge, double — combined with an addictive difficulty curve made it spread quickly across the web in 2014, spawning hundreds of themed clones and cementing the sliding-merge mechanic as its own puzzle genre.
Frequently asked questions
How do you play 2048?
Use the arrow keys on desktop or swipe on a touchscreen to slide every tile on the board in one direction. Whenever two tiles with the same number touch, they merge into a single tile worth their combined value. The goal is to create a tile worth 2048.
Is 2048 unblocked at school or work?
Yes. This version of 2048 runs entirely in the browser with no plugins, downloads, or installs, so it loads on school Chromebooks, work computers, and networks that block app downloads.
What is the best strategy to win 2048?
The most reliable approach is the corner strategy: keep your highest-value tile locked in one corner and avoid moves that pull it away from that corner. Combined with a descending snake pattern along one edge, this keeps the board organized and makes large merges predictable.
Is 2048 a game of luck or skill?
Both. New tiles spawn in random empty cells, which adds an element of luck, but a player using a consistent strategy such as the corner method can reach the 2048 tile in the large majority of games, which makes skill the dominant factor over time.
Who created the 2048 game and when?
2048 was created by Italian developer Gabriele Cirulli in March 2014 and released as an open-source project. It was inspired by the game Threes and by an earlier clone called 1024.
What is the highest possible tile in 2048?
On the standard 4x4 board, the theoretical highest tile is 131072, though reaching it is extremely rare and requires a near-perfect game. Most skilled players are satisfied with reaching 4096 or 8192.
Can I play 2048 offline or on mobile?
The game works on any modern mobile browser with swipe controls, and your score is saved locally in the browser so you can pick up where you left off. A stable internet connection is only needed to first load the page.
Is 2048 good for kids or for brain training?
Yes. 2048 has no violence and helps build number sense, planning, and pattern recognition, which makes it a popular choice for casual brain training across a wide range of ages.
